How to split trip expenses fairly

Group trips go wrong over money more often than over weather. A simple system agreed at the start removes almost all of the friction.

1. Decide what is shared before you leave

Agree which costs are split by everyone (accommodation, transport, group meals) and which are personal (souvenirs, a solo activity). Writing this down in one line avoids awkward conversations later.

2. Let one person pay, and record it immediately

It is fine for whoever has cash or a working card to pay. What matters is that the expense is logged at once, with the amount, who paid and who took part. Memory is the enemy: a day later nobody agrees on the price of the taxi.

3. Split by participation, not by headcount

If two people skip a dinner, they should not share its cost. Splitting only among those who took part keeps the ledger fair without needing anyone to speak up.

4. Handle uneven amounts exactly

A bill of 1,000 among three people is 333.33 each, which leaves a paisa over. Decide that the remainder rotates or goes to whoever paid. An app that distributes it automatically means shares always add up to the total.

5. Settle once, at the end

Paying each other after every meal creates dozens of tiny transfers. Wait until the trip ends, then settle the net balances. Because debts are netted, most groups need only a handful of payments. See how debt simplification works.

6. Keep a shared record everyone can see

Transparency prevents suspicion. When every member can see every entry, nobody has to ask what a number means. बाँडफाँट keeps one ledger per group that updates for all members, even if some of them added bills offline.
